Burns and Nartey in the medals at Commonwealth Champs

Andy Burns, a University of Bath Sports Performance student, struck gold in the open weight category at the championships and bronze in the under-100kg division, while Emmanuel Nartey won bronze at under-73kg.

Burns (pictured), representing Scotland, won all four of his contests in the round-robin open weight competition to take the title. He beat Mauritius judo player Ludovic Begue in 13 seconds and then despatched South Africa’s Shaun King in 14 seconds.

Who Invented Judo

ArticleJudo is a martial art and also a sport. The word "Judo" translated into English means roughly, the "way of gentleness". "Ju" representing "gentleness" or "giving way" and "do" representing "way". Judo is different from many other martial arts in that it does not use strikes as a major means of attack and defense.

Judo is centered on the application of chokes, arm locks, holds and throws. Judo's main concepts are "mutual welfare and benefit" and "maximum efficiency".

What is Judo

Judo has its roots in ju-jitsu, which goes back many centuries in Japanese history when is was a brutal and often lethal method of self-defence and unarmed combat. Judo was established as a modern physical activity when in 1882; Professor Jigoro Kano founded his Kodokan Judo.


Responsible for education he was aware that physical education in his country at that time was sadly lacking. Jealous ju-jitsu masters began to question this system and the matter could only be settled by arranging a tournament between the various schools.
